Awareness campaigns
October 2015 / Across Albania
Organised by “BRAINSTORM ORGANIZATION” in cooperation with the University of Medicine, Tirana and the Student Council of the University of Medicine, Tirana.
An activity running throughout October, the month dedicated to Breast Cancer awareness. A disease that has spread widely and rapidly in recent years calls for strong awareness among the population. This activity reached around 20,000 women and involved 250 students.
The main aim of this activity followed our motto: “Prevention is better than cure!” We split into working groups in around 20 cities across Albania throughout October. The work had three parts: handing out information leaflets to women we met in the street; providing the necessary information on the symptoms of the disease and on treatment and screening methods, through talks by doctors and students in large halls where many women from every social, economic and professional background were invited.
Another important part of our work was interviewing women we met on the streets of the city about what they knew of this disease. This statistical work gave us valuable results and allowed year-on-year comparison of the overall level of awareness in the Republic of Albania, and of the effectiveness of awareness campaigns and other efforts by state and civil-society bodies.
This activity is built on the volunteer spirit every student showed in a huge effort, which also encouraged their interest in taking part in humanitarian teamwork.
